Home exercise programs (HEPs) are personalized activity plans designed by occupational therapists to support a child’s development outside of therapy sessions. These programs are tailored to meet the child’s unique needs, addressing areas such as strength, coordination, balance, fine motor skills, sensory processing, or self-regulation. HEPs often include fun, engaging activities that are easy to integrate into daily routines, such as animal walks, wall push-ups, drawing tasks, or sensory play. These exercises provide consistent opportunities for practice, reinforcing skills learned during therapy sessions and promoting generalization across environments. Home carryover is crucial for children to make progress in therapy. This is just like the analogy of going to the gym: if we only go to the gym once a week, we’re not going to get any stronger! HEPs are suitable for children of all ages and abilities and empower families to actively participate in their child’s progress. By making therapeutic activities a part of everyday life, HEPs enhance skill development and foster independence in a natural, supportive way. We also get kids involved in making them in terms of content or fun visuals, which helps increase the buy-in to use them at home!
