The Astronaut Training Program is a sensory integration approach designed to improve a child’s vestibular, visual, and auditory processing systems. This program can be used with children of all ages who experience challenges with balance, coordination, attention, ocular motor skills, or sensory regulation. Through carefully designed activities, the program stimulates the vestibular system using head and body movements while simultaneously engaging the eyes and ears to improve sensory integration. The program is most effective when used as part of a home program completed regularly along with a sensory diet of home activities. It can include Pre-Astronaut exercises or use of an “Astronaut Board” which is used to spin children in a very specific and therapeutic way. These exercises help children process and respond more effectively to sensory information from their environment. Occupational therapists use the Astronaut Training Program to support motor skills, spatial awareness, and attention, as well as to help children regulate their energy and emotions. The benefits include better postural control, improved coordination, enhanced focus, and the ability to manage sensory input more effectively, making it easier for children to succeed in daily activities.
