The Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) program, part of the broader Learning Without Tears curriculum, is a multisensory approach designed to teach handwriting skills in a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way. It focuses on building foundational skills such as proper pencil grip, letter formation, and spacing while incorporating activities that enhance fine motor coordination and visual-motor integration. HWT can be used with children of various ages, from preschool through middle school, and is particularly beneficial for those struggling with handwriting due to fine motor delays, visual-motor challenges, or learning differences. In OT, therapists use HWT tools such as wooden letter pieces, specific chalkboards, and workbooks to teach letters and numbers systematically and step-by-step. Beyond that, we make recommendations for multi-sensory learning, including things like ball writing, foot writing, flashlight writing, glitter writing, and using the HWT music to help facilitate whole body learning. This program helps children develop confidence in their handwriting while reducing frustration by presenting concepts in an accessible, incremental manner. Its benefits extend beyond writing, supporting school readiness and overall academic success. HWT also has a cursive writing curriculum for older children as an alternative to printing.
